The Minister for Transport and Infrastructure announced the joint Commonwealth NSW Government study into Sydney Airport and related land transport matters will be released in the second half of 2011.

The study has performed a series of economic modelling and that modelling shows that a second airport will be required sooner rather than later.  The Minister noted that Sydney has a cap of 80 movements per hour.  A movement is defined as a departure or an arrival.  The lengths of peak periods when the maximum number of movements are required are increasing to cope with demand. Mr Albanese made the observation that excessive delays at Sydney Airport have an effect through the whole Australian Aviation network and the Australian economy as a whole.  Solutions will have to found to assist in the growing congestion at Sydney Airport.

The Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) released a report in April 2010 with their forecasts of air traffic through major Australian Airports.  In the last year statistics were available, the 2008/2009 Financial Year, 32.2 million passengers passed through Sydney Airport.  BITRE forecasts growth of 4.5% per year at Sydney.  At this rate 55 million passengers are forecast to pass through Sydney Airport in 2019/20 and the requirement by June 2030 will be to cope for 72 million passengers per year.
