Air traffic controllers resolve pay claim – but passengers still face delays

Australia’s air traffic controllers have voted overwhelmingly to accept newly negotiated pay and conditions , ending threatened industrial action after their Certified Agreement with employer Airservices Australia expired last December.

The offer will go some way toward slowing the overseas exodus of experienced Australian ATCs tempted by lucrative offers from Europe and the Middle East, but passengers can expect continued delays and cancellations until Australia’s shortfall of ATCs is remedied.

Civil Air, the air traffic controllers’ association, says a national ballot, concluded last night, gave 95 per cent support to a new deal which will see an average wage rise of 4.7 per cent per annum over the next three-and-a-half years.

Executive Secretary Peter McGuane says members have also retained the right to sick leave as required.
